When you first open it, the program will tell you that you don’t have any virtual machines set up on your computer. Install VirtualBox After you install the program, you may have to restart.Another quick note: the iso file is large, and the virtual machine software can be somewhat taxing on your computer, so if your “host” computer is old and without space, this might not work for you. Take note of where you store the file, you’ll need it later. So download the Windows 7 32-bit image: it will be a *.iso file. Anyway, if you are trying to work with the EPA Water Treatment Model as I mentioned above, you will want a 32-bit Windows operating system, and I found Windows 7 to work just fine. If you are a student, visit this link, log in with your CU Identikey and Password, click the gear in the top right, “Office 365 Settings”, select “Software”, and you should then have the download page for Office 365 available to you. If either of the links are outdated, or you are at another institution, do an internet search for the office of information technology and see if your institution has a site license. The current link to download Microsoft Software is here for faculty and staff. For University of Colorado Boulder students and faculty, you have access to various versions of Windows software for free online. Obtain a copy of the operating system you want to install. For example, if you are sitting at a Windows machine, make sure to download VirtualBox for Windows. Be careful when you are downloading VirtualBox: select the proper “host” computer. The computer that you are actually sitting and working on is the “host” computer, whereas the computer you will set up later will be called the “virtual” computer. Essentially, this program sets up an entire new “virtual” computer within your computer, so you can install different operating systems, etc. VirtualBox is free, and seems to work well with what we’re doing, but note that there are also other virtual machines as well. Download VirtualBox which is the virtual machine software. For example, a collaborator of mine uses the EPA Water Treatment Plant model which only seems to work under 32-bit versions of the operating system. Also tried with different ports, but didn't help either. In this post, I’ll talk about how to set up a virtual machine on a PC, in order to run outdated software that may have been optimized for a different version of Windows. I also tried with another USB stick and my external hard drive, but get the same problem. I really don't know what to do anymore (I also made all the updates for Windows 7 and restart it to see if it makes any difference, but no it doesn't). Under the same “USB Mass Storage Device Properties” window I also clicked on the “Uninstall” button, took out the USB stick and put it back again and get messages “Installing device software” and then “Device driver software was not successfully installed”. Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date” (this is obviously not the case. Next thing I tried is that under the “USB Mass Storage Device Properties” window I clicked on “Update Driver”, I then get “Search automotically for updated driver software” and finally when the search has finished I get “The best driver software for your device is already installed. You can find more details below: USB Mass Storage Device has a driver problem. I click on the “Apply this fix” button, but it doesn't solve the problem as the next message I get is “Troubleshooting was unable to automatically fix all of the issues found. Reinstalling the driver might fix this problem”. I launched the troubleshoot who gave the following information “There is a problem with the driver for USB Mass Stoage Device. Under “Device and Printers”, there is a yellow triangular sign with an exclamation mark next to “Mass Storage Device”. However, the USB stick doesn't appear on my Computer (where you see the local disk and CD drive). Indeed from the VirtualBox, I am able to select the USB sitck from the devices menu. I want to be able to read data of a USB stick from Windows, but I have some problems with that and I think it comes from Windows (and not from the VirtualBox or linux, but I'm not sure). My computer is running on kubuntu and I recently installed Windows 7 Pro (64 bits) in VirtualBox on linux (Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager Version 4.1.12_Ubuntu).
